Convocation and veg food at buffet

Today was a really long and tiring day. I went back to school for convocation ceremony and rush here and there to take photos. I had wanted to try their buffet at the tea reception for our ceremony, unfortunately there wasn't time for any. Luckily, we had lunch at the buffet of the previous ceremony :) and there were a lot of food suitable for vegetarians. I was surprise! In fact most of the food at that lunch buffet was vegetarian and the caterers had labelled them in "vegetarian" on the trays of veg food. I particularly like the mock black pepper chicken kebabs, which were almost gone when I went there. They also had fried bee hoon (usual), and some other pastry and bread stuff which are vegetarian, but not vegan. There is also this nice glutinuous rice ball snack with the inside filled with bits of peanuts and probably ground lotus seed paste. The outside of the snack also has sesame seeds sticking on it. I can't remember what it is called. Today I accidently ate some non-vegetarian bee hoon! I find the taste very strange, but I didn't suspect anything until I bit a tiny chunk of meat. I immediately spit it out and I stopped eating the bee hoon...Bleah...

Anyway, an interesting thing happened today. I was happily eating the veg food at the lunch buffet and this man, who I thought was eating his meat, told us "there's meat over there" and that statement was directed more at me.

Congratulation on your graduation. What's your plan? Opening a vegan cafe cum bookstore? Hehe, be sure to let us know ok?

Maybe he saw you eating only the veggies and the mock and thot that you didnt know the real thing over there? Or maybe he's insulted that someone can actually enjoy mock black pepper chicken kebabs more than the real thing? If it's so, it's bizzare...

Thanks zlyrica :)
That would be cool! But I would need some $$ in "Dreamy's fund for a vegan tomorrow" first, so it's finding some work to slog for now :) Yea I think it was the former, I can't imagine he wld be insulted by ppl eating mock chicken hahah.. that wld be funny! But the mock chicken is a fav, it was the only tray which is either empty of almost empty at the tables.

Thanks crystal :)
Yea that's true! But buffet is also wasteful, I dunno if the uneaten food goes to the bin or not :(

YAY DREAMY! You must be happy about graduating. Good for you and good job.

i can't believe that guy was so rude to you... why can't people just be concerned with what is on their plate instead of commenting about what you are or aren't eating! Boo on him.

Love all the veggie options and sorry you accidentally ate meat. i hate when that happens... i've been veg for 26 years and as you can imagine during all those years, it's happened to me a few times. ARGH!

i'm so proud of you for being veg and promoting it so much like you do. i think like zlyrica said, you should open a vegan cafe. How cool would that be?!!?

Keep up the great work and also keep up your fantastic, thoughtful posts... i love your blog...

Congratulations indeed! :-)

That's awesome they had labeled veg food and even mock stuff at such an event! Just waiting for the labeled vegan foods outside veggie restaurants. :-/ That really sucks about the meat though. I had a similar experience last year at a company dinner, we had specified to the restaurant staff very clearly it should be only vegan food for me and therefore I just happily bit off to what looked like TVP pieces... but the texture just wasn't right so I spit it away immediately and asking the staff turns out it was chicken! Yuck! Just the thought made me feel bad for ages. :-( Anyway, just saying that it happens to all of us. :-)

Thanks everyone :)

Kleopatra, I like a vegan cafe and let everyone know that vegan food's cool! but like what many said, I need some start-up cash 1st :)

Yea it's really disgusting when when u realise that u were biting into meat... I immediately got myself some punch. Hay.. shld have rinsed my mouth 1st.

Yup how did u know VB? :) Do u have any job recommendations? hehe..
I am also quite lost now, I grad w a biological sciences major, but I dun think i want to go into this industry as a research officer or assistant..:S

coz another friend of mine in NTU also having convo..

For bio science, I think can work in HSA for analyzing those evidence like those cool CSI rite? I wish I could work as that! :P

hahaha.. I thought ppl w a forensic sci major stand a better chance. Anyway, SG has low crime rate.. forensic sci ppl are not in high demand hehe... It all seems so cool on tv when u see those ppl in lab coats working with pieces of hair, sequencing DNA etc. but then when u have to do that everyday, it's really different haha.. after a few months break i was thinking maybe labwork isnt so unattractive, but then if i get into it again, i dunno if i will still think that way :)

I knew someone who has a Science in Chemistry degree working in HSA. So, I think forensic is not really necessary

Working in the forensic lab department?

If Dreamy and Veggie Bun going to open a Vegan Cafe, can consider this ?

Sell vegan products at your cafe, so i can shop and eat at the same time.

If you can have all those hard to find vegan food at your cafe, i can relax there and satisfact all my craves :)

Dreamy, yup, working in forensic lab doing tests for evidence from crime scenes. :)

Crystal, yes, that's my idea too. And must make the prices affordable for ppl. But really, talking only is no use as need $. hehehe...

That will be a good idea! but like what VB mentioned, we will need angel investors in that case :)
