Winter Solstice Festival

Happy Winter Solstice! Today Chinese celebrate Dong Zhi 冬至, a time where families have a reunion and enjoy bowls of glutinuous rice balls (Tang Yuan) in sugar syrup. Tang Yuan paste can be bought from markets and rolled into balls before cooking in sugar syrup with ginger. If you are lazy, you can buy those ready-made modern ones, which usually come with fillings in the rice balls - sesame paste, peanuts, or red bean paste. These ready-made Tang Yuans can now be bought anytime in the year in supermarkets.
