What is the meaning of slide 12?
What does Buddha mean by eating meat that was manifested by compassion?? It is meat or not?

Hi,
That means it's not meat from sentient beings (includes animals).

So Buddha is actually a vegetarian? I heard many ppl telling me that He's not. But not sure how true..

I am not sure too, but I think the important thing is I think it's good to be a veg as we will not contribute to the demand for meat and animal slaughter.

Hi, actually it depends on which school of teachings one accepts. In Surangama Sutra (a Mahayana sutra), Buddha did declare that the meat He ate was of his manifestation.

I agree with dreamy, what's impt is the lives of hapless animals rather than whether Buddha was or not a vegetarian. In anyway, how can we compare ourselves with the Buddha when we yet reach perfection. :)

Well, i am a free thinker, so I dare not ever compare my lowly self to the Buddha. I was asking the question on whether Buddha is a vegetarian or not out of curiosity and because many ppl said Buddha Himself wasn't a vegetarian yet he became Buddha so they do not need to be a vegetarian too. Hope you know what I mean. :)

Oh, also, I would really like someone to explaint to me what is manifested meat??
Does it mean that is imaginary meat? mock meat?

Yes "mock meat" was created by the compassionate Buddha in his time - probably because he knew people are attached to meat - to the extent that they might kill to have real meat.

There is no scripture clearly saying the Buddha ever ate meat. But in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Buddha said he never ate meat.

The manifested meat was actually the product of Buddha's transcendental power of transformation and not of animal slaughter. In modern context, yes it probably means mock meat. :)

Interesting zlyrica,
I thought it was "meat that doesn't come from animals"? Or was it mock meat like those we bought from stores nowadays?

Hi dreamy,
Actually i can't verify whether Buddha's manifestation of meat is the same kind of mock meat we found in the mart now. It could very well be it, afterall mock meat is the only meat that doesn't come from animals. :)

I see, thanks for the explanation :)
