Backslide

I went for this seminar today. The people knew I was a vegetarian, and they bought vegetarian food for me. Well, at least, they thought so. One of the guys was even asking me if I take eggs or dairy, and he understood I am a strict vegetarian. They bought me mix vegetable rice - 2 kinds of vegetables and some potatoes. I took the 1st bite of veggies, and started to dig into the rest of the veggies. Surprise! I saw anchovies. I dig into the next pile of veggies. Surprise! Baby shrimps. Ah! At least there's still potatoes! To my disappointment... the potatoes were cooked with minced meat. I am left with rice. And I tried to eat as much of the white portion as possible, the rest went into the bin. I finish my food 99.5% of the time, I am so sad I wasted food today :(

I suffer with you. I had a similar experience when I went diving last weekend in Malaysia. They put ikan bilis in EVERYTHING, including the vegetables and rice. A few times I've accidentally taken a bite of ikan bilis infested food and I can't understand why they bother. It tastes so bad. Great for me, at least, so I won't crave any...

Fortunately, I've been to this resort a few times and have learned (the hard way) how bad their food is, so I had brought stuff from Singapore to avoid malnutrition.

Hay... Malaysia is not as vegetarian friendly as Singapore unfortunately :(. Does it work if you tell them that you are vegetarian and ask them to make something vegetarian?

Strangely, I can't really taste any ikan bilis in the veggies in my first mouthful, maybe I wolf it down.. (hopefully there isn't any in it).

In the past, my mum say that people use ikan bilis in soups etc. so that they will taste "sweeter", but even b4 I went veg, I don't really like eating ikan bilis because they have this black strip in their bodies which reminds my of either poop or their gut, urgh..

Sometimes i wonder are people that unmindful or simply bo chap (don't care)... I mean if i'm a meat-eater and buying for a vegetarian friend, i will be extra careful with the order, it's a simple respect one can give to other. Sigh...

Have you encounter this before too Zlyrica?

I think they are probably unmindful, even if they really aren't, it will be more positive to view it that way right? hahaha...

Haha... maybe not so much of bo chap, but bo sim (not whole-hearted), haha...

No la, i'm lucky that those who buy me vegetarian food really make sure i had real vegetarian food. :)

Ah? they didn't know those food are cooked with meat? or did they think that small fish and small prawns are not meat?

I've encountered ppl thinking meat=pork only. So chicken, ducks, fishes are not meat.
