Why organic meat may not be that environment friendly

I was quite surprise to read that organic meat is actually wasteful from a magazine. I have no idea how true it is, though it seems to make sense.

The first reason they put forth is organic animals require a longer time to grow to as they are not pumped with hormones. This results in the need to consume more organic plant food to feed them. It will be better if humans eat the plant food instead.

The second reason is that it takes many folds of resources such as water, energy and land to produce a pound of organic meat compared to non-organic meat.

Since organic animals are brought up with more space per animal, more farm space would mean more forests cleared to raise the animals.

The magazine suggests that saving the Earth will be better by reducing both the consumption of non-organic and organic meats.

I think the excuseatarian will simply point out that he eats food from grazing animals on already cleared land and that no deforestation was needed to "produce" the meat.

This is very selfish and short-sighted thinking, but that's what they will reply.

There's no right way to raise and eat animals.

Hi anonymous,

The magazine is not available online. If you like, I can scan it and send to you, just drop me an email.
