Ugly dog contest and discrimination

I saw this in the local paper today. This dog won the "world's ugliest dog" contest.

Although the dog probably didn't know what was happening, I find it insensitive to hold such a contest. Imagine holding a contest where we have the ugliest human in the world and a human blind in one eye, crippled and balding come to win such a prize. In such a situation, we'd probably would call it discrimination against the disabled and violation of human rights. But when we come to the animal realm it is perfectly fine to have the ugliest, smelliest etc. animal contest. I do not see any purpose in it except to serve humans' greed of the prize money. Moreover, such a contest further increase our discrimination of "cute kitties and doggies who should be fed and groomed nicely" to "not so pretty chicken, cow and pig who are meant for food" and those "ugly smelly rats which should be dead or those lab mice who are too insignificant to deserve life".

Discrimination exist everywhere. My collegue once said - you are either discriminating against or discriminated against. For example, vegetarians get discriminated by omnivores (sometimes). When there are a lot of vegetarians, the omnivores get a taste of being discriminated against (sometimes). That's on the human level. We then have the human-animal level (speciesism), whereby we discriminate against the animals, and discriminate between different types of animals e.g. cat and cow. This is the reason I think being a vegetarian reduces at least one kind of discrimination.

I hope that people would not purposely hurt/disfigure the dogs to win future contests for the "fame" & rewards...

While it is in our nature to pass a judgment I find contests like the one you mentioned to be an utterly fruitless waste of time, money and effort. I have no idea why they get national attention.

Funny, because I think the dog is adorable, not ugly.

You're right--there's so much discrimination in the world. So sad, but all we can do is work to change it.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU.
IT IS INSENSITIVE TO HOLD SUCH A CONTEST.
THIS INCREASE A DISCRIMINATION ACTTITUDE WE TEND TO HAVE AGAINTS ANIMALS AND AMONG PEOPLE.

yes you may see this contest as being cruel and unusual but its not for greed or for prize money its to raise awareness that this breed of dog is being treated unfairly because of this contest i adopted a chinese crested mix who to me is adorable and the love of my life he has no hair he has extra toes and messed up teeth. If it wouldnt have been for this contest that everyone in america seen i would not have my dog today. It has nothing to do with putting the animal "down" its about raising awareness that this breed is treated differently because of its looks and are usually bred for show only. If you are a true animal rights "person" like you seem to be then you should be thankful for this contest that was seen because of this contest there has been a dramatic change in the way people look at these dogs i do volunt. work for hopes haven chinese crested rescue and ever since this contest become popular our adoption has been going very well. I dont mean this in a mean way and i understand where you are coming from but it has its ups and downs but if it were not for this contest i would have never been aware of the sad conditions that many cresteds and other breeds live in and i would have never had my ichabod he is my love and my life and i dont know what i would do if i woke up in the morning and he wasn't by my side. So please take into consideration that this was more for raising awarness for these unusual breeds and helping people become more familiar with these animals because like i said the adoption turnout for these animals is much greater than what it was before. I can also assure you that all our dogs go to wonderful homes! thank you!

Awwwww, he's SO CUTE!!!!!

My mom is a racist for animals.
She won't let our dogs in my bedroom and she keeps them in a tiny cage.

She won't let me become a vegan but I won't listen to her. She thinks vegans are stupid an malnourished. I hate her stupid junk attitude.

Great let's end beauty contest too! Because they're the same thing, a contest to see who is stronger in that aspect. While we're at it why not also stop the olympics? They're the source of evil of our world.
Fortunely there's no such thing as human uglyness contests. There's not things like the ugliest people in holywood, or the ugliest people in the world, etc, etc... I've been dreaming all my life.
