Synthetic human skin in replacement of animal testing

This is awesome news! L'Oreal's scientists have developed lab-grown human skin to use for cosmetic testing. This is a much more accurate way of testing as compared to animal testing. Cosmestics are tested by observing the number of cells killed on the synthetic skin - known as Episkin. I just hope the human skins were not grown with animal products.

The skin cells are grown in collagen. I checked wiki and found this:

"Collagens are widely employed in the construction of artificial skin substitutes used in the management of severe burns, as well as for a wide range of dental, orthopedic, and surgical purposes. These collagens may be derived from bovine, equine or porcine, and even human, sources and are sometimes used in combination with silicones, glycosaminoglycans, fibroblasts, growth factors and other substances."

"Recently an alternative to animal-derived collagen has become available. Although expensive, this human collagen, derived from donor cadavers, placentas and aborted fetuses,[4] may minimize the possibility of immune reactions."

Hehe... so now, do you wanna be animal-lover, or human-lover? Another dilemma like the possums or trees... :P

Although for human collagen, they are obtained from cadavers or aborted fetuses, it can be argued that collagen from pigs, horses, or cows are also from dead animals, so it isn't "wrong".

It sure took them long enough! I am glad they are doing this, but I've been fighting vivisection since the 80s and know the seeds of this technology has been in place for a long time. Consumer pressure has finally reached the point where demand will influence their profitability. So I'm glad, but ethically, why did they have to wait so long?

hay.. it's always a dilemma dun u think? I think if they are willing donors or placenta it's still ok... I am not pro-abortion so I dun really support the fetus one.

Yea, but humans are Willing donors, animals aren't, they didn't say "hey human! kill me and get my collagen to grow ur own skin"

I suppose ultimately it's still profits and not ethical issues. Perhaps like what u say, consumer boycott has affected them. Also animal testing is really much expensive.

Well, I feel that if they are doing on synthetic skin grown on collagen, it is at least better then direct testing on animals. I've seen the video clip of the testing on rabbits.. they looked so pitiful :*(

yea that's still much better i agree

This is really intersting. L'Oreal is one of the worst- they have been testing on animals forever, not that I would ever buy any L'Oreal products because the products are not vegan and I'm sure they still test on animals as they perfect the technology but at least it is a step in the right direction!

Yes they may use the skin to "further confirm" the test on animals sigh... :S

YOU guys are gross. You say the animals don't have a choice. Well, neither do the aborted babies. You think they like having their brains sucked out and their bones crushed! YOU would rather save a rabbit. Not very smart people. How would you like it if you were tortured and you had no choice. America is stained with murdered blood. All you have to do is take a pill or we could do what we were meant to do and save IT for marriage. But no little Sally wants to do what she wants to do and if she kills a baby no big deal they will use the leftovers for makeup.

Hello anonymous,

I hope you can read the replies carefully.

No one said they are pro-abortion or that they support the use of aborted fetuses for the collagen.

The best choice is still not to use cosmetics tested on non-volunteered humans or animals.
