Why make the animals suffer before slaughter?

Veggie Bun mentioned about an interesting comment a reader made in a local news forum. It was written by a lady who was concern about the inhumane procedures of animal slaughter.

Although it is impossible for the whole world going vegan, and we may be better off pushing for more humane treatment of animals instead, I still believe there is no such thing as "humane killing". Maybe less cruel, but less cruel is not humane. And about the "more humane treatment" of animals for slaughter... It sometimes worries me that once that level of "humaneness" is achieved, we will just stop moving towards the "no kill" state - ultimately, animals will still live in the fear and suffering of slaughter.

Still, since many are concerned with why animals are subjected to the cruelty before slaughter, I can only say profit and greed know no bounds. Meat is one of the items traded in the commodity market, it goes to show the value we give to the life of other species on Earth. Mere commodities. Why bother about how they are raised or treated? I only need the flesh to be fresh and clean, that's good enough to rake in profits. If none of the consumers raise issues on the treatment of animals, I can hardly believe the companies will bother about it. As long as it lowers production cost, why fret about how it's done? That is how sad things are sometimes, but if you want to end this, reduce your meat consumption, that will be the very first step.

I also can't understand the idea of "humanely" raised meat- what does humane slaughter look like? What are these people imagining??

"Your honor! My client have killed X, but as we have demonstrated - without a shadow of a doubt - he killed X humanely. Also, my client kept X alive for his whole life in his basement, so I must remind the jury that without my client X would not have lived at all. With all this evident, I urge the jury to do the right thing - set my client free!"

Until we allow our court system to accept a defense like this, talk of "humane" killing is nothing by hypocrisy. (and NO I do not suggest that we allow it to happen...)

Haha... that's exactly why I felt girlie's article was funny in the first place.. if she wants to treat the animals humanely she shouldn't buy pork at all.. :P

Maybe she thinks she can humanely eat slaughtered animals...

The word humane is so misused.

If people are able to convince themselves that they only eat "humanely" raised meat, they will not think twice about the meaning of the word, nor will they actually live up to their supposed "humane" standards. I have yet to meet ANY meat eater who is even half-consistent with his/her commitment to "humane" meat.

When was the last time you heard anyone turn down meat at a dinner party because he/she can't be sure it's humanely raised?

When was the last time a "humane" omnivore turned vegetarian when traveling to a country with horrible animal protection laws?

Huh? Haha, I don't, I didn't even mention what meat.
Anyway, i was just being playfully when I said that "she thinks she can humanely eat slaughtered animals..." :P Any sensible person will know that was not possible...
