Teacher got kicked out for preaching vegan views in class

Dave Warwak teaches Art at school and got called to leave class for teaching veganism to his students. To him it is important that the students appreciate themselves and life to be able to appreciate art and he says he wasn't forcing his believes on the students, just providing some information if they are interested. But others don't see it that way, the principal was concerned about the school being used to show that non-vegetarians support cruelty to animals.

While it really seemed like Warwak has crossed line and become too militant and preachy, if the vegan diet was treated just as "normally" as the meatarian lifestyle in the first place, there is nothing wrong in teaching others how to eat more healthily and respect the lives of others. Maybe he should stick to just teaching Art, but I am pretty sure if children were taught to respect the lives of cats and dogs and treat them nicely, the issue would probably not snowballed to him getting kicked out. Besides, I agree with what he said that Art is something you just can't teach others how to appreciate, you have to respect and appreciate things in life etc. before you can appreciate Art.

I read about this story today. It's really frustrating. Like you said, the teacher may have overstepped his bounds, but he was only reacting to the horrible meat and dairy environment at his school. How gross that schools all across America get paid to fill their students cheap meat and milk, and to surround them with advertisements for this horrible stuff. I can't believe how much power the meat/dairy lobby has in this country- makes me sick.

How can we get the message out without being preachy? Same old problem, same old problem...

If I reply honestly to the "Why are you vegan?" question, I'll be perceived as a moralizing a**h**e. I've discovered that people who ask the question don't want details. The best answer, for their ears, should be "religious reasons", "food allergy" or "I don't like meat". As soon as I deviate from their preferred replies, I'm being obnoxious, disgusting or just strange.

*rant rant rant*

"if the vegan diet was treated just as "normally" as the meatarian lifestyle..."

That will never happen. Please eat your Tofu in peace. On behalf of every other natural born omnivore, please do what you want, but harm no one. Harm DOES INCLUDE being annoying, aggravating, or treating others with a “holier than thou” attitude.

You will NEVER be normal, that is something you are going to have to either work to change, or accept and deal with your entire life. Fact is, WE don't want to be like you, at all. As painful as that might be to hear, it's the truth. We ALL want to feel like we fit in, but you can't grill others in order to do so.

anonymous, I am not trying to force veganism down everyone's throats, but rather just promoting the lifestyle vegans live. Whether others accept it or not is their choice, if you do not wish to go vegan, that is perfectly fine. I must say, it is certainly insulting to vegans to say they aren't normal.

"Not only at Fox River Grove Middle School but also in thousands of schools across the country, corporate agribusiness has run amok in the attempt to utilize public education as a place to establish the naturalization of commercial meat and dairy as lifelong eating habits, to generate increased sales, to subsidize the food industry against decreased producer prices, as well as to funnel below-health standards food not fit for public sale. Warwak was correct to demand the riddance of the Dairy Council’s posters as they had in fact already been targeted for removal from approximately 105,000 public schools by the Federal Trade Commission." No matter what anyone argues, schools feeding unsuspecting children the corpses of once living beings and promoting breast milk--complete with its blood, pus, and hormones--stolen from confined, drugged, and tortured cloned creatures as normal and healthy beyond infancy is a socially, mentally, spiritually, and ecologically damaging, unnecessary crime against humanity.
