The lunar month of September has arrived, and with it comes the
Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The vegetarian festival lasts for 9 days, and it has more to do with religion than celebrating vegetarianism. Devotees will commit themselves to a vegetarian diet for this period for the reason of keeping themselves "pure". This year the festival starts on 11 October to 19 October. I was in Phuket a couple of years ago and just missed the vegetarian festival by a week..needless to say I was bummed.
The vegetarian festival is not only held in Phuket, it's also held Singapore or Malaysia if you visit these places, but you have to do your homework where in these countries the festivals are held :)
The festival is more about religion than food - the vegan food eaten by people during the festival is part of the process to purge the body of bad spirits. You can find this food in Phuket year round, but it's much easier to find during the festival.
I was just in Bangkok this weekend and the vegetarian festival is also celerated there. Places that were taking part in the vegetarian festival had a yellow flag stating the chinese word for vegetarian (Su) so very easy to spot. Had fried veggie maggi mee for 10 Baht (S$0.50) at Chatuchak - small portion but super spicy, yums!
How interesting! I wish I could be there.
ah, my mom is also vegetarian every year during the festival.. it's called the Jiu Wang Ye rite?
While culture, spirituality, identity, and releasing tension and animalistic human nature are all part of the Phuket Vegan fest, another factor often not mentioned is the attention and publicity it draws...but hey, definitely worth a first hand seeing if you can handle it all!
That's intereting Jamie, which means veg food can be found there easily!
$0.50 is good for fried mee! How I wish I could have it there like what bazu says :d I don't know where are the places holding this celebration in Sg...
Yes VB, it's Jiu Huang Ye Dan, my mum is also vegetarian for this period too :)
Hmm you have a point siamerican wanderer, I don't know if I can handle seeing them "ascend knife mountains, and decend fire seas"
